Dr. Tae Yun Kim receives Humanitarian Award; next up, Nobel Peace Prize!

Tae Yun Kim wins Humanitarian Award

Last night, at the 12th Annual Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, among new inductees such as Jim Tunney (the Dean of NFL Referees) and Bob St. Clair (San Francisco 49er from 1953 to 1964), Dr. Tae Yun Kim, Great Grandmaster, Hall of Fame inductee in 2002, received a Lifetime Humanitarian award for all the work she has done throughout her life to help people.

Tae Yun Kim Energizing the Audience

The event was amazing.  Dr. Kim did what no other honoree did.  She prayed before she spoke.  She sang Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd…

She captured the hearts of all the people in the room.  When she was done singing the prayer, she told her story of how she came up with her motto, “He Can Do, She Can Do, Why Not Me” (which I will save for another post).  Everyone was so energized by her speech and by her energy!

He Can Do She Can Do Why Not Me!

He Can Do, She Can Do, Why Not Me!

Here are some of the reasons why Dr. Tae Yun Kim received this great award!

Her birthdays are spent feeding dinners at homeless shelters, where instead of receiving gifts herself, she asked all guests to make donations to the shelter.

She has held fundraisers to help the Make-a-Wish foundation and Save the Children Foundation.

Herself a cancer survivor, she has participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

And it goes on and on…

But, I think the most significant thing that Dr. Tae Yun Kim has done in her life is her life mission of Saving Souls.

She has been helping people of all ages on personal levels throughout her entire life.

A young man whose daily life included smoking, drinking, taking drugs, gambling and stealing, who dropped out of high school, who gave up on ever believing that he could have a positive, productive life…somehow, through God’s grace and love, and the promise of an iPad (really!), his life journey led him to Dr. Tae Yun Kim‘s life.

Today, he doesn’t smoke, doesn’t drink, do drugs, gamble or steal.  He lives a clean and healthy lifestyle and trains in the martial art of Jung SuWon every day.  With no hope for meaningful employment with his criminal record before he met Dr. Kim, he now successfully works at a high tech company, an opportunity that Dr. Kim herself helped him to achieve.

Dr. Kim truly saved his soul.  His life was headed nowhere really fast.  He had no hope for the future, no skills, no energy, no desire… and through her teachings, her training, and most of all, her love and unwavering commitment to make a difference, his life has turned around.

Another young student was only about sex and drugs.  He ditched school constantly and was failing all his classes, including PE!  He hooked up with an older crowd and as adept at buying and selling drugs.  He was rebellious and wouldn’t listen to his parents.  He had no future in our society as a citizen who makes a positive contribution to the world.  He only cared about himself and how much money he could make selling drugs and how much sex he could get.

Today, he doesn’t drink, do drugs or have loose sex any more.  He goes to school and got all A’s and B’s in the last semester. He is learning about the high tech industry through a high tech company in Silicon Valley.

Another soul saved.

When I think about these students and many more, I am so touched by how incredible Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim is.

Anyone with money can go and send food to a starving nation… or build houses for the homeless… or even build a school.

But, some souls are heading in completely the wrong direction.  How many people can say that they are able to turn that soul around and save it from being damned forever?

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim is the one who is saving souls.

I believe she should receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Saving Souls, one at a time.
